Burger UK, Camden
Living in South London, it’s very rare that I travel to the other side of the city, and when I do – it’s almost always for food. This trip to the other end of the Northern Line landed me in Camden, in hunt of another burger to add to my long list of Halal burger joints in London.
Still a relatively new burger joint that’s been around for only a few months – which usually means a tonne of mistakes, average verging-on-poor service and a weak menu. But I must say, from my visit I really thought that they’d done a great job – wouldn’t have guessed that they were new to the market if they haven’t told me!
The restaurant is quite small, can probably fit around 20 people max inside – so you may have to queue if it’s busy. But I quite liked the fact that it was small and more personal – as this meant the atmosphere was more calm and I could enjoy a good conversation (that I could actually hear) while eating. Also I feel like being relatively small compared to other burger joints i’ve tried may explain the great customer service that we received!
What really impressed me at this restaurant was the attention to detail. The staff knew the menu inside out and offered great recommendations of what to try – I’ve never met someone able to use so many adjectives to describe the drinks that they serve, as their waiter – impressive stuff! Although what impressed me most was the restaurant’s efforts to keep the process of slaughter Tayyib (pure) as well as Halal. We were told that the animals are ethically cared for prior to slaughter, as they’re grass-fed and free range, and I must say based on the quality of the meat we tasted here – they’re clearly got that right!
It’s very rare to find restaurants which care so much about the quality of their meat, as most Halal restaurants you visit (especially those not Muslim owned) would struggle to even tell you whether the Halal certification is HMC or HFA! So I must comment that their efforts were really impressive!
Ok, now to the important part – the food.
When visiting a new restaurant, I always asked the waiter/waitress what their favourites from the menu are – because chances are, they probably have tried everything multiple times over, and will know what’s best! The waiter recommended that the 3 best burgers from the menu were the 2 chicken burgers on the menu (chicken thigh and grilled chicken), and their beef burger! Even though there were only 2 of us, we couldn’t turn down an extra half of a burger each!
First up on the menu, and my personal favourite, was their Chicken Thigh burger! The menu said ‘deep fried battered chicken thigh steaks, house – lettuce and mayonnaise’. Priced at £8, I thought this was very good value for money (especially considering now days you can walk into your local chicken shop and bossman will try to charge you £6 for a burger that he pulls out from under the counter saying ‘here’s one I made earlier’ like he’s on Blue Peter). The meat – genuinely could taste the difference from other burger joints i’ve tried, good quality delicious chicken.
I must say – after this burger I was already pretty full as I’d also been overloading on their Truffle Mayo Fries (£4). These had their own recipe truffle sauce on top, which had a rich flavour – nothing like i’d ever had on my chips before (i’m usually a ketchup and mayo kinda guy).
After munching my way through the chicken burger and scoffing my face with the fries, next up was the Beef burger! Made with free range beef and topped with lettuce, tomato, red onions, pickles & their house sauce. Their beef burger comes in 3 sizes, which is an idea i’m really a fan of. Meant I could post this burger as part of my #10MealsForUnderATenner series! Again, really good quality succulent meat + their house sauce is a real winner too! We went for the 6oz – priced at £6.50.
Only god knows how we managed to get through so much food – but finally, we were on to the Grilled chicken burger. This was the one that the waiter most pushed me to try – and if he’s reading, thanks for the recommendation bro! Now I must say, by this point I was absolutely stuffed, so my taste buds weren’t as active and alert – but this was a seriously good burger! Priced at £10 – a little more expensive than their other burgers, but probably what i’ll most likely opt for in my next visit!
All in all, certainly a thumbs up from us! Only thing I wasn’t too fond of was the drinks options, but I’ve been told that they’re adding milkshakes to the menu – and no one’s a bigger milkshake fan than yours sincerely… so i’ll be back.
A restaurant I’d definitely suggest you to add to your lists and pop into if you’re ever around the Camden area – especially as I don’t know of many other good Halal joints in the area!
