Halal Restaurants in Birmingham
Now for sure there’s no shortage of Halal restaurants in Birmingham, but a Google Search for ‘Halal Birmingham’ just returns lots of TripAdvisor results, so I figured I’d take it upon myself to help out any fellow Halal-foodies making a trip to Birmingham by pin-pointing the best eats in the City!
Birmingham is notorious for its food – I’m sure you’ve all heard of Ladypool Road and notable restaurants such as Tipu Sultan and Akbars. During my month working in Birmingham, I tried to visit as many different lunch/dinner/dessert spots as possible – and have compiled them here for you (in alphabetical order).
I’ve kept my reviews short and sweet, with a few words about my experience, a rating out of 10, the restaurants’ address and its Halal-status. I’ve also included a map below of the city and the restaurants mentioned in this post, so you can find out if there’s any near you.
Restaurant list
Akbars (Indian) – 7/10
Undoubtedly one of my favourite Indian restaurants in Birmingham. Infamous for their large Naan breads that take up half the table (and go a lot further than you expect them to!) I’m more of a fan of their starters than their mains, they do great Lamb Chops and a delicious Cheesey Seekh Kebab. Having said that – they also do a mean Chicken Karahi! Occasionally you may have a bit of a wait during peak times, but they have a well organised buzzer system and a large waiting area so you won’t be on your feet for long.
Address: 184 Hagley Rd, Birmingham B16 9NY
Halal Status: All meat served is Halal, however Alcohol is also served on the premises.
Antep (Turkish) – 8/10
My friend who I go to Birmingham often to visit is a die-hard fan of Antep, and for this reason our link-ups often end up here. Not complaining though, they do a huge Mixed Grill (that’ll easily feed 3 hungry people, for only £25) and their Mocktails are impressive for a Turkish restaurant. Meat is tasty, especially the Adana Kofte, just not a massive fan of their Ribs, but then again I don’t like Ribs at all.
Address: 368-370 Ladypool Rd, Birmingham B12 8JY
Halal Status: All meat served is Halal and no Alcohol is served on the premises.
Boston Tea Party (Cafe) – 6/10
I must admit, this is another place that came across courtesy of Instagram. Serving up a pretty healthy menu, based in a beautiful and picturesque grand house. Unfortunately, the food didn’t live up to expectations, but I’d still come back just for the amazing coffee.
Address: The School Yard, 106 High St, Birmingham B17 9NJ
Halal Status: Halal meat is not served, and Alcohol is also served on the premises.
Chaiiwala (Chai/Indian) – 8/10
Chaiiwala is now a well-known chain throughout the UK with cafes in locations including London, Leicester and Blackburn. I’m a huge fan of their chai – especially the Caramel Chai (which isn’t on the menu – but ask nicely and you may get!) and the Chai Latte. I wasn’t a huge fan of the food, but for the price I think what they do is great. Also, the service is absolutely fantastic here.
Address: 410 Ladypool Rd, Birmingham B12 8JZ
Halal Status: All meat served is Halal (although most options are vegetarian) and no Alcohol is served on the premises.
Chaophraya (Thai) – 6.5/10
Chaophraya is certainly the most well-known Thai restaurant in the city. It boasts a wide menu, and the service is impressive, making you feel as though you are in a up-market restaurant in the middle of Bangkok! The Chicken and Lamb is Halal here, however please do confirm on the day of visiting, as this may have subsequently changed. Been here a few times, and usually have a good experience – so would recommend a visit. The reason for the 6.5 rating is due to one of my more recent visits where I tried the Lamb Teriyaki which I found underwhelming for £20.
Address: Saint Martins Square, 6 Spiceal St, Bullring, Birmingham B5 4BW
Halal Status: Only the Chicken & Lamb is Halal (however best to confirm on the day), and Alcohol is served on the premises.
Colbeh (Persian) – 8/10
I have to give it to this restaurant, I think this is now one of my favourite restaurants in the city. TripAdvisor has it up there as the no.1 Halal restaurant in Birmingham, and I can see why. They do a great Mixed Grill – and their Adana Kebab is to die for! I’ve also tried ordering a take away from here via Deliveroo, and can tell you that the quality is the same.
Address: 207 Hagley Rd, Birmingham B16 9RE
Halal Status: All meat served is Halal, however Alcohol is also served on the premises.
Damascena Coffee House (Middle Eastern) – 6.5/10
I only managed to have lunch here during my most recent stay in Birmingham, so can’t say much about this place, although their Lahm Bi’ajeen (flatbread topped with Lamb mince) was pretty delicious for a little over £3. This seems to be a popular spot for Brummies, so possibly one to keep on your radar!
Address: Portman House, 5-7 Temple Row W, Birmingham B2 5NY
Halal Status: All meat served is Halal, and no Alcohol is served on the premises.
Eis Cafe (Desserts) – 8/10
Instagram brought me to this cute little cafe situated on Coventry Road. They offer a wide selection of milk/freak-shakes, cookie doughs, cakes and insane combos of ice-cream. We tried 2 freak-shakes, both were good but I always find them to be slightly sickly after a few sips. The cookie dough however, would give Pizza Hut’s cookie dough a run for its money!
Address: 500 Coventry Rd, Birmingham B10 0UN
Halal Status: Halal cafe, with no Alcohol served on the premises.
Flamin Patties (Burgers) – 7/10
Another addition to the multitude of restaurants on Ladypool Road, but out of which I’d probably say this would be my go-to for a burger (or a difficult split decision with Tru Burger). I found the service quite slow on my visit, but staff were fantastic and the food tasted great too, nice milkshakes!
Address: 332 Ladypool Rd, Birmingham, B12 8JY
Halal Status: Fully Halal restaurnant, with no Alcohol served on the premises. .
Gaucho (Argentine) – 8.5/10
You could say I ended up here by mistake. On my way to the hotel I was staying at whilst working in Birmingham I thought I’d try my luck and see if they happen to offer any Halal meat – I mean, we are in Birmingham after all! And to my surprise they did. They suggested that they require 48 hours notice to get cuts of steak in, but happened to have some available on the day, so we gave them a go – best decision. Incredible steak – I usually don’t like my steak too fatty, but here I cleaned the whole plate off. Top-notch service, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised at how reasonable the bill was.
Address: 55 Colmore Row, Birmingham B3 2AA
Halal Status: 48 hours notice required to pre-order Halal meat, Alcohol is also served on the premises.
German Donor Kebab (Kebab) – 7/10
GDK is definitely a well known brand name throughout the UK, so needs little explaining. This became a regular lunch spot for me during my stay in Birmingham – I’d recommend trying out the Lahmacun wrap if you’re ever visiting.
Address: 84 Bull St, Birmingham B4 6AB
Halal Status: All meat served is Halal and no Alcohol is served on the premises.
Gourmet Burger Kitchen (Burger) – 6/10
I must admit, I’m a sucker for GBK! It’s a pretty basic meal, nothing overly special – but I love their Chicken burger and they usually do a pretty good Oreo milkshake. Can’t go wrong with a trip here. Would also recommend downloading their app as you can usually pick up something free using it.
Address: The Waters Edge, Brindleyplace, Unit 4, Birmingham B1 2HL or 113-115 Wharfside Street, The Mailbox, Birmingham B1 1RF
Halal Status: Only the Chicken is Halal – all their Chicken is Halal however if you opt for it grilled then it’s cooked alongside other Non-Halal meats, therefore we advise opting for it to be Panko Crumbed, as this ensures no cross-contamination. Alcohol is also served on the premises.
Handmade Burger Co (Burger) – 6/10
I can’t really differentiate between this place and GBK, they both do a decent burger, but again – a restaurant you’ll have seen dotted around London and other major cities, so not necessarily one you must visit during a trip to Birmingham. They do a decent burger, and quite often have offers on too!
Address: Bullring Shopping Centre Bullring, Birmingham B5 4BW
Halal Status: Per their website, the Chicken and Beef is Halal, but always best to confirm with the restaurant on the day. Alcohol is also served on the premises.
Heavenly Desserts (Dessert) – 6.5/10
Heavenly Desserts do desserts and they do them well! Definitely the most well-known dessert spot in Birmingham, at least amongst the Asian community. You’ll often see people queuing out the door for a seat inside.
Address: 371 Ladypool Rd, Birmingham B12 8LA
Halal Status: All food served is Halal and no Alcohol is served on the premises.
Ice Stone Gelato (Dessert) – 7.5/10
This is definitely my favourite dessert spot in Birmingham – whenever I visit the city, I always make a trip here for their Peanut Butter Stack cake (comes heated up with melted caramel sauce drizzled over it, and a scoop of ice cream *drools*). They have a huge list of combinations from their menu, or you can opt to create something of your own.
Address: 353-355 Ladypool Rd, Birmingham B12 8LA
Halal Status: All food served is Halal and no Alcohol is served on the premises.
Indian Streatery (Indian) – 7/10
Out of the 4 weeks I spent working in Birmingham, I probably got my lunch from here at least 10 times! They do a great chaat bowl – the meat isn’t Halal but I was going for the Veg Samosa chaat with Pakoras, which goes down a treat!
Address: 21A Bennetts Hill, Birmingham B2 5QP
Halal Status: No halal meat served, and Alcohol is also served on the premises.
Lahore Village (Indian) – 8/10
I discovered this place at 2am after a wedding when we fancied a bite to eat and were driving around Birmingham finding a restaurant that’s still open! These guys close at 5am everyday, so if you ever find yourself in a similar situation then this is probably your best bet! Really good food, and surprisingly was still pretty busy even at 2am!
Address: 204 Ladypool Rd, Birmingham, B12 8JS
Halal Status: Fully Halal meat , no Alcohol is also served on the premises.
Marco Pierre White (British) – 6/10
I’ve always wanted to visit MPW for the reputation it has – and also for the incredible view at the top of the Mailbox! Food did live up to expectations, was a good steak but nothing to write home about. Service however, was appalling – to the point that we had to ask for the service charge to be taken off the bill. Would I recommend a visit – yes, but I’d go with very little expectations in terms of service.
Address: 200 Wharfside Street The Cube Wharfside Street, Birmingham B1 1PR
Halal Status: 48 hours notice required to pre-order Halal meat (although they tend to keep a lot of Halal meat available in stock on a daily basis), and Alcohol is also served on the premises.
Mowgli Street Food (Indian) – 4.5/10
Sadly, I have to say that I’m not such a fan of this place. Despite the cool and hipster setting, where you can have your meal sitting on swings – the food doesn’t live up to expectations. I will say that I enjoyed my starters, but sadly was not a fan at all of my mains, and had to send them back to the kitchen. Had a little word with the staff and mentioned my disappointment in the food, and to be honest they didn’t seem surprised, so I’m not really sure what’s going on with this restaurant.
Address: 30, Grand Central, Stephenson Pl, Birmingham B2 4BF
Halal Status: All meat served is Halal, however Alcohol is also served on the premises. Two of their dishes also contain Alcohol, be sure to ask the staff to point out to you which ones these are.
MyLahore Cafe Birmingham (Indian) – 7/10
Don’t think I’ve been to many restaurants with a menu as big as this place! I really like the atmosphere here, looks a bit like an American diner (but with Indian food of course). They do all of your standard Indian favourites, but also burgers, paninis, wraps, etc. I wasn’t a massive fan when I visited, but I will advise you not to base your opinion purely on what I say, as most people I’ve spoken to love this place!
Address: 191-194 Bradford St, Birmingham B12 0JD
Halal Status: All meat served is Halal, and no Alcohol is served on the premises.
Nandos (If you don’t know what Nandos is then I’m really worried for you)
Now I’m not going to give you a detailed review of Nandos, because quite frankly it’s infallible – right? But for Halal Nandos in Birmingham you’ll need to visit the one on Broad Street (near Five Ways station) or the one in Star City, as unfortunately the restaurants in the Bullring and Mailbox are not Halal *cries*.
Address: Five Ways Leisure Centre, Bishopsgate Street, B15 1DA or Star City, B7 5SB
Halal Status: All meat served is Halal, however Alcohol is also served on the premises.
Oodles Chinese (Chinese) – 7/10
I thought the concept behind this restaurant was very cool – pretty much the Subway of the Noodles world! You choose your base (e.g. noodles, rice, etc), then your meat, and then toppings. All at a very reasonable price.
Address: 323 Ladypool Rd, Birmingham B12 8LB
Halal Status: All meat served is Halal and no Alcohol is served on the premises.
Pushkar (Indian) – 7/10
Pushkar is definitely one of the pricer restaurants I’ve visited in Birmingham. Does the service live up to the price tag? – Yes. The food? – not necessarily. Personally, I’m not a fan of spending a killing on Indian restaurants as I’m usually after a full-stomach rather than a picturesque meal, so I’d probably opt for one of the cheaper Indian restaurants in Birmingham – like Akbars. That being said, Pushkar is a great location if you’re looking for a special occasion.
Address: 245 Broad St, Birmingham, West Midlands B1 2HQ, UK
Halal Status: Only the Chicken is Halal (confirm on the day as this may change), and Alcohol is served on the premises.
Tamatanga (Indian) – 6/10
I’m in two minds about this restaurant – the starters were great, but I felt like there was room for improvement in the mains. I went for their Non-veg Thali for my mains, and no doubt it is a very aesthetically-pleasing meal, but for a restaurant that claims to offer street food, I would have liked more authentic Indian flavour coming from my curry.
Address: Orion Building Navigation St, Birmingham B5 4AX
Halal Status: All meat served is Halal, however Alcohol is also served on the premises.
Tipu Sultan (Indian) – 8.5/10
Without a doubt, one of my favourite restaurants in Birmingham. Tipu Sultan is set in a beautiful venue, with a large enough capacity such that you won’t be kept waiting long even when the car park is full! The menu is comprehensive, and everything from their Mixed Grill, to their curries, and even their Mocktails is always a winner.
Address: 43 Alcester Road, Birmingham B13 8AA
Halal Status: All meat served is Halal and no Alcohol is served on the premises.
Toro’s Steakhouse (Steak) – 8/10
Probably one of my favourite restaurants in Birmingham. Service isn’t always the best, but you can always guarantee a great meal here. I’m here at least once during every visit to Birmingham that I make – and without a fail I always go for the Toros Special with Chips and Pasta *drools*.
Address: 365 Ladypool Rd, Birmingham B12 8LA
Halal Status: All meat served is Halal, and no Alcohol is served on the premises.
Tru Burger (Burger) – 7/10
I’ve always been a fan of Tru Burger – even while studying in Birmingham for my undergrad I was a regular here. I went for the Krispy Kreme burger on my last visit, and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was! I would however like to see them up their drinks game, as I’m not a big fan of their milkshakes.
Address: 369 Ladypool Rd, Birmingham B12 8LA
Halal Status: All meat served is Halal and no Alcohol is served on the premises.
