Zelman Meats – Harvey Nichols Knightsbridge
One of the questions I get asked most frequently as a food blogger is ‘Where is the best Halal Steak in London?’.
Now by no means am I a steak connoisseur, but I think I finally have an answer.
Zelman Meats is based on the 5th floor of Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge, with a window-view the store and located next to various other restaurants like Burger & Lobster and YO! Sushi. But despite being located in a shopping mall, the restaurants ambience feels secluded from the rest of the hustle and bustle of the mall, making you forget you’re sitting 5 meters away from a 5-pack of socks.
The food: the restaurant offers a good variety of Halal cuts, of which we tried a few including the Picanha and Chilean Wagyu. The prices we found to be very reasonable given the quality of meat and the location of the restaurant. The service was outstanding – with the waiter giving us an in-depth understanding of the difference between all the cuts of meat (see video at bottom of post) and more background to the restaurant. We had a slight issue with one of our steaks, which appeared over-cooked, and the staff replaced it with no hassle.
Note: all cuts come at a minimum order of 200 grams.
Picanha
(£7 per 100 grams)
The cheapest priced cut they have, but by no means does that mean a compromise in quality. £7 for 100 grams of top quality meat I thought was very impressive, cooked and served with a sauce for an extra charge of £1 (ask which sauces are Halal). Dripping with flavor, a cut I’d definitely recommend a 200/300g portion of – if I was to go back, I think this would be my go-to!
Chilean Wagyu
(£30 per 100 grams)
Clearly an expensive cut at £60 for this plate of 200 grams, but damn was it worth every penny. Meat that melts in your mouth (as well as your wallet) – one that I’d come back for on a special occasion, like hitting the lottery. I think this has to be, hands-down, the best piece of meat I’ve laid my hands on.
Dirty Steak
(£36 for 400 grams of Australian Striploin)
An impressive cut of meat that is cooked directly on charcoal and served. Was skeptical as to how this would taste, but after the waiters recommendation we figured to give it a try – and we were impressed at how much flavour the meat was soaked with from just a short time on the charcoal. Truly a fault-less steak. One I’d recommend if you want to try something different.
Chocolate fondant with Vanilla Ice-cream
£5.50
By no means a show-stopper dessert, but a nice sweet end to a great meal!
